Direct File is a free online tax filing tool from the IRS. For the first time ever, the software offers taxpayers the chance to file online, for free, directly with the IRS. The tool is mobile-friendly and available in both English and Spanish.

Eligible taxpayers who lived all year in one of the following 24 states can use Direct File: Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Direct File is a truly free alternative to expensive tax preparation software sold by private companies like TurboTax. It’s up to each taxpayer to decide which form of filing is best for them. But experts estimate that Direct File could save the average taxpayer 9 hours and $150 every tax season.
