The Coalition For Free And Fair Filing
Americans spend 1.7 billion hours or $31 billion annually to file their taxes, even though the overwhelming majority should be able to file in mere minutes and for free.
The IRS is developing a free electronic filing tool that would give taxpayers the option to file for free and ensure that we all have access to the crucial tax credits we have earned. This is particularly true for immigrants who are currently excluded from vital economic security benefits in the tax code and communities of color who have the hardest time accessing the tax system. A free tax filing option would save 13 hours and $250 every tax season.
The Coalition for Free and Fair Filing is led by the Center for the Study of Social Policy, Code for America, Economic Security Project Action, Groundwork Action, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, Public Citizen, and RESULTS, and supported by cross-cutting national, state, and grassroots organizations committed to taking the cost and headache out of tax filing for tens of millions of Americans by supporting the Internal Revenue Service’s efforts to develop a free, simple, and publicly-owned online tax filing tool.
